Geographical
location |
|
Gangwon-do is a very important
region because it is on the hub of the East Sea
area. In addition, Gangwon-do will be the center
of a unified Korea in the future.
Such geographical characteristics highlight
the importance of Gangwon-do, which will play
a central role in the politics, economy, and culture
of the coming East Sea era. In addition, it will
serve as a strategic base for commerce with the
northern district. As a result, its position will
change from being on the outskirts to the focal
point of Korea. Even today, Gangwon-do is the
most suitable place in fulfilling the prerequisites
as a base to establish South and North Korean
exchange and cooperation in various fields.
Gangwon-do borders the DMZ (demilitarized
zone), and as a result, there are a number of places
to which access by civilians is prohibited. In
particular, such places as the Truce Village,
Reclaimed Area, Tongil (Unification) Observatory,
The third Underground Tunnel, and The Peace Dam
are actual spots of history, which furthers experiential
education and solidifies the people's determination
to unify South and North Korea. |

Natural
Environment |
| |
Gangwon-do is a vast area which is 16,873§´
in size or 17% of the nation's area, which has
a small population and less developed areas. However,
its mountains, sea, valleys, lakes and caves are
superior in its environmental cleanliness compared
to those of other provinces. In particular, the
natural environment in the boundaries of the DMZ
has been preserved for over 50 years, thus making
the future of this province bright in terms of
environmental preservation and potential land
development. Furthermore, its wonderfully
preserved nature and historical sites are regarded
as the nation's top tourist and recreational areas.

and Culture |

Gangwon-do is a place of patriotic and
historical significance. It was Gangwon-do where
the fiercest resistance to the Japanese occupation
took place. The resistance to Japanese occupation
represented by Ui Am and Yu Inseok is recorded
in the annuals of Korean independence history,
and Koreans will cherish their name for a long
time. Furthermore, Gangwon-do is proud
of the birthplace of many famous writers. These
writers include: Lee Yulgok, who made an integrated
survey of past studies on 'Seongrihak' (Sung Confucianism)
and rallied the nation to undertake preventive
measures by insisting on building a large army
of a hundred thousand people; Sin Saimdang, who
is known as an exemplary woman of the people;
Heo Gyun, who advocated the idea of universal
equality; and Heonan Seolheon, who became a famous
literary figure in Korea as well as China. In
addition, the province is a cultural area with
several important figures of modern literature
and art such as Kim Yujeong, Lee Hyoseok, and Park
Sugeon. It is also has a cultural heritage center
with a number of traditional folk arts and intangible
cultural properties such as the Gangneung Tano
Festival (on the fifth day of the fifth lunar
month), Jeongseon Arirang, and Hoingseong Hoedaji
